Suzanne H. Irby serves as the Assistant Director of Communications for the Virginia Tech College of Engineering. With a five-year background in digital and print communications for nonprofit organizations, Suzanne focuses on strategic, creative storytelling on behalf of the college, which includes writing, reporting, and editing stories, elevating their reach externally, and collaborating with university relations, departmental communicators, external partners, and other stakeholders. Through these efforts and their integration into long-term strategic communications planning, Suzanne aims to provide a window into the research and impact of students and faculty, alumni journeys, cross-disciplinary projects, and more.
Suzanne graduated from the University of Virginia with a bachelor’s degree in foreign affairs and anthropology. She received a master’s degree in journalism from New York University with a concentration in magazine writing.
Suzanne previously worked for environmental conservation organizations Oceana and Rare, initially as a digital communicator and later as a senior staff writer. She comes to the Virginia Tech College of Engineering after serving in 2019 as a communications specialist for Virginia Cooperative Extension, based within the Virginia Tech College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
