Emily serves as the director of communications and marketing for the college, leading a comprehensive program that includes strategic communications planning and evaluation as well as broad reputational awareness, brand positioning, and executive communications. Her team oversees college websites, social media, and digital content strategy; storytelling, media relations, and editorial workflow, including visual asset creation and management; and the support of prospective student recruitment initiatives and marketing. As members of the college’s advancement infrastructure, the college communications team also plays an integral role in fundraising campaigns, event promotion, and alumni/donor communications and engagement.
Working closely with department communicators and leadership, Emily also helps guide department strategy in relation to aligning priorities with effective communications and marketing tactics. Her duties include managing the team of communicators at the college level as well as those embedded within departments.
Emily holds a master’s degree in education from Georgia Southern University and a master of fine arts degree in creative writing from the University of Georgia. She earned her bachelor’s degree in English from Texas A&M University.
Emily joined Virginia Tech in 2017 and most recently served as the director of communications for the College of Architecture and Urban Studies before joining the College of Engineering in her current role. Her prior experience includes leadership roles in marketing and communications, instructional technology, and teaching at George Walton Academy, an independent K-12 college preparatory academy in Monroe, Georgia.
