Responsibilities
Melody serves as the assistant director of communications for Virginia Tech's College of Engineering, where she helps oversee the college’s editorial content and processes; works with the media to promote broad reputational awareness of the college as well as its departments, programs, research, and faculty experts; and executes strategic communications plans in support of Advancement and student recruitment initiatives.
Education
Melody holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Brigham Young University.
Background
In 2021, Melody joined Virgina Tech as a writer and editor in the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost; she accepted her position in the College of Engineering in 2025. Prior to working at the university, Melody spent 20 years as a freelance writer, publishing articles in the New York Times, Washington Post, Slate, Reader’s Digest, The Guardian, and many others. The author of two books about thriving where you live, she’s also a frequent public speaker and podcast guest.
