New Faculty and Staff: Getting Started
This guide will help you get familiar with the computing services commonly used by the College of Engineering's Dean's Office team. Please review Virginia Tech's Acceptable Use Guidelines before using your computer or accessing any online resources.
Create Your VT Username
- Your VT Username (PID) is your unique Personal Identifier. Your VT Username and password grant you access to Virginia Tech services, including the library databases and online personal information.
- You can create your own VT Username once your department’s Banner Human Resources representative has completed the necessary steps and given you your Virginia Tech ID number.
Get Your Computer
- Your office should already have a computer for you, and the COE Dean's Office IT Staff should be aware of your arrival. If not, have someone in your office submit a help ticket for you.
- New computers are purchased by each individual office when needed. Every five years those using Banner computers will have them replaced if eligible. Eligibility requirements change year to year.
Connect to the Internet
- On campus your computer will be connected using an Ethernet connection.
- Away from your desk and when at home you should use a wireless connection.
- Be sure to check your Virginia Tech Account Manager page to view your profile and check your network access and password. Your network password is needed to access the Eduroam WiFi network at Virginia Tech.
Email and Files
- Faculty and staff in the Dean's Office use Office 365, which includes Outlook email and calendaring. This service includes integrated email, appointments, tasks, contacts, and directory access.
- You will need to check Virginia Tech's MyCat tool to make sure that you have access to Microsoft 365 Licensing, and to make sure that your Exchange account is active. Your account should be active seven days before your employment start date.
Intradepartmental Communication
- The College of Engineering Dean's Office Administrative Assistant maintains a directory listing of the Dean's Office Personnel. Email jbiczel@vt.edu to make sure you are on the directory listing and to be added to the "Deanery" listserv.
- Schedule an appointment to take a photo with Digital Communications Marketing Manager for your profile on the website.
Setting up your Zoom Phone
Network Infrastructure and Services (NI&S) is currently preparing users and service managers to migrate from the Avaya phone system to Zoom’s Phone and Call Center solutions. Refer to this page for information regarding the current status of Zoom Phone migration.
