Aerospace and Ocean Engineering

The Kevin T. Crofton Department of Aerospace and Ocean Engineering builds on fields related to the design and analysis of vehicles and structures that operate in a fluid. Areas of faculty expertise, include: aerodynamics/hydrodynamics, autonomous systems, computational mechanics, energy systems (wind energy, ocean energy, combustion, nuclear fusion), propulsion, and space engineering. U.S. News & World Report ranks the undergraduate program 15th and the graduate program 12th. The size of the undergraduate student body is approximately 500 and graduate student body approximately 200. For many of the aerospace and ocean engineering students, it’s not just about what they are designing, but how and where it will be used, and more importantly, how it will benefit society.

Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of the nation’s largest with more than 60 full-time dedicated faculty involved in critical research, development, and teaching, including focus areas: robotics, both autonomous vehicles and systems; energy engineering, bio/micro/nano systems, design materials; manufacturing, both 3-D printing and additive; and nuclear engineering. U.S. News & World Report ranks the undergraduate program 14th and the graduate program 22nd. With one of the largest and most active American Society of Mechanical Engineers student sections in the nation, the department offers opportunities for students to attend professional conferences, internships, and professional development courses. The average graduate class size is less than 30 students and the size of the undergraduate student body is approximately 1,000 and graduate student body approximately 300.

Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics

The Department of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics is focused on solving complex problems that transcend disciplinary boundaries. Combining fundamental mechanics with biomedical science, the department pursues real-world applications through research and innovation that enhances quality of life. Research and course offerings include: biomechanics, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, translational cancer research, and tissue engineering. The size of the undergraduate student body is approximately 100 and graduate student body approximately 200.
