Reagan Shanchez, of Jamestown, RI, is a sophomore majoring in Mechanical Engineering and minoring in Biomedical Engineering with a GPA of 3.72. Reagan says the best thing about being a Vrginia Tech Engineer is all the opportunities available. There are so many organizations, design teams, and research opportunities that really allow you to do anything that you think of - if you have an idea, there is likely a way to make it happen with the resources Virginia Tech Engineering provides. After Reagan graduates, she aspires to work in the medical device industry developing state of the art medical technology.

During Reagan's freshman year she participated in the Hypatia Living-Learning Community and participated in the Female Engineering Recruitment Leaders Team (FERL). Reagan is currently the Public Relations officer and Webmaster for the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). Though SHPE, Reagan is involved with many volunteer events. Each year SHPE dedicates time to assist with family READs at the Blacksburg LIbrry where they will help to watch children of non-native English speakers while the parents take English classes. Reagan has also participated in a virtual 5K to raise money for the YoSTEM organization, and her favorite volunteering event was the Big Plant where she helped to plant thousands of trees in the New River Valley.

Reagan's biggest role models are her parents. They have done so much to raise her and show her what is right and wrong in life, she gets a lot of her motivation and determination from them, and would not have been able to go to such an amaing university if it were not for them.

In middle school, Reagan fantasized about playing profession hockey when she grew up, but knew it was not a realistic path. However, she has not given up on hockey and currently plays ice hockey for the Women's Ice Hockey Team at Virginia Tech. It is an important aspect of her life outside of school.

If Reagan could change one thing, she would change how people treat each other. She wishes people were overall more considerate, respectful, and compassionate. A little bit of love and understanding can really go a long way in improving people's lives and overall happiness.

Reagan's favorite cartoon character is Jerry Mouse from Tom and Jerry because of his ability to think and be innovative on the fly - the dynamic between Jerry and Tom makes for great entertainment.
