Paul Tovar
Paul Tovar, a senior pursuing a B.S. in Construction Engineering and Management at Virginia Tech, is known for his passion, talent, and potential to excel in his chosen field. Hailing from Cicero, IL, Paul takes pride in being a Virginia Tech Engineer and cherishes the opportunity to be surrounded by like-minded individuals who share his drive. The university provides him with the necessary resources to pursue his dreams and allows him to embrace his true self. Being a Virginia Tech Engineer comes with its own set of challenges and choices, but Paul considers it a privilege to face them head-on.
In terms of personal life, Paul has two siblings—an older brother born in '96 and an older sister who tragically passed away at the age of eight in 2009. Back home, Paul has a pet Monk Parakeet named Baby, who has been his companion since they were both young. When Paul isn't immersed in his studies, he enjoys engaging in various hobbies. Writing, watching movies and stand-up comedy, and cooking are among his favorite pastimes. However, spending quality time with other people holds a special place in Paul's heart, making it his primary hobby.
When it comes to favorites, Paul finds himself drawn to Courage the Cowardly Dog, a cartoon character he admires despite not particularly enjoying the show. The allure of seeing where Courage's journey would lead captured Paul's imagination. In the realm of music, Paul gravitates towards Hip-Hop and any genre closely related to it. As for films, he has a difficult time choosing between La La Land, Blade Runner, Pulp Fiction, and The Matrix, each offering a unique appeal.
One of Paul's role models is his grandfather, whose departure made him realize the ease with which his grandfather tackled life's challenges and overcame seemingly insurmountable odds. Although not without flaws, his grandfather embodied true strength and resilience. Paul aspires to carry on his legacy and hopes to become an even greater version of his grandfather.
Reflecting on his childhood dreams, Paul recalls a desire to be someone who could influence others. During his middle school years, he wanted to emulate figures like Rachel Ray or Chef Pepin, who could inspire people through their culinary talents. Now at Virginia Tech, Paul dreams of making a positive impact in the future.
Within the College of Engineering, Paul is involved with CEED (Center for Enhancement of Engineering Diversity) and serves as one of the Committee Liaisons for the Stable Minds Initiative within the Galipatia Living Learning Committee. Additionally, he actively participates as an Ambassador for his major, giving prospective families tours of the campus and providing them with a sense of reassurance.
Volunteer service holds great importance to Paul, as he finds fulfillment in serving his fellow students. Acting in service to others is where he derives value, and he strives to make a positive difference in their lives.
Given the opportunity to change one thing, Paul adamantly states that he wouldn't alter a single aspect of his life. He believes that every experience and decision, whether positive or negative, has contributed to shaping the person he is today, and he embraces the person he has become.
