For Scieneering Students
Joining the Scieneering Minor Program of Study
We are very excited that you are interested in Scieneering. On this page, you will find everything you need to know about the program and how to join the ranks as a Scieneer.
Entry to the Scieneering program will no longer require submission of a formal application.
Eligibility
- Rising VT sophomore or junior status (at least two academic years remaining at VT)
- Major in a science or engineering discipline; others may be considered- please contact the Scieneering office
Expectations
- Scieneers will complete one of the interdisciplinary minors- Interdisciplinary Engineering and Science or Science, Engineering and Law.
- Scieneers will complete the equivalent of at least 3 credit-hours of interdisciplinary research outside of their major discipline, under the direction of an approved faculty mentor. This research experience will take place AFTER completing preliminary minor course work and will not count towards their chosen minor.
- Scieneers will present research outcomes at the annual VT undergraduate research symposium and/or at external professional meetings, in oral or poster sessions.
- Scieneers may elect to maintain an ePortfolio of their Scieneering experience, in order to document, organize, reflect on, and share evidence of their educational accomplishments in the program.
- Scieneers will meet with the Scieneering manager once per semester to discuss progress/concerns.
- Students who complete all requirements of the Scieneering program will be designated as "Scieneering fellows" and will receive an official Scieneering graduation cord, to be worn at commencement exercises
How to Join Scieneering
In order to be officially considered a Scieneer, students need to add the interdisciplinary the minor to their record. IES is administered through the College of Engineering; please visit their website to add the minor during select periods in the academic year (see Changing Majors application for information on adding the minor).
Students enrolled in the IES minor will also complete a Capstone research experience. Students in the IES minor will conduct a total of at least two one semesters of interdisciplinary research in order to complete the Scieneering program.
Sample Course of Study for Scieneers
Freshman/Sophomore Year
- Learn about Scieneering
- Enroll in interdisciplinary engineering & science minor- IES
Sophomore/Junior Year
- Take required core courses in minor
- Attend seminars and workshops
Junior/Senior Year
- Apply for and complete capstone research with approved mentor (IES minor)
- Continue and complete minor coursework
