"You can learn one lesson many times or many lessons one time"

Johann Ruiz is from Midlothian, Virginia and is a Sophomore in Computer Engineering with a minor in Computer Science with a GPA of 3.98. He says the best thing about being a Virginia Tech engineer is the ability to earn a competitive engineering degree amidst the wonderful Virginia Tech community and Hokie school spirit.  When he was in middle school, he thought he wanted to be a Chemist since google had told him it was about math and science, but that soon came to an end after some bad science fairs. Now that he is at Virginia Tech, he would like to get his PhD and become a professor in engineering after working in industry. Johann says that if he could change one thing, he wishes it was normal for milk to be poured in the bowl first before cereal.

Before Virginia Tech, Johann had participated in RISE and Pathways. During his time at Virginia Tech he has been an RA for the STEP, a Peer Mentor for AHORA, and a member of the Dean's Team. In his free time, Johann likes to spend time with friends, watch football (Go Patriots), and workout at the gym.

Johann says his role model is his older brother Jolsuan because he looks to him for advice regarding college since they’re both first generation students. Including Jolsuan, Johann has six siblings: a twin brother, an older brother and sister, and three half-brothers. He also mentioned that his favorite cartoon character is Cyborg from Teen Titans because he thought the technology was really cool. Johann also shared that he listens to most genres of music  (he has a 700+ song playlist on Spotify to support this), but if he had to choose one it would be Pop.
