The University of Nottingham had its beginnings as the University College Nottingham, founded in 1881. In 1948, the college was awarded the Royal Charter and became The University of Nottingham. The University of Nottingham's position as a world-class university is confirmed by its ranking in the global league tables. The university is ranked in the U.K. top 10, the European top 30 and in the top 1 percent of all universities worldwide. Nottingham's main campus, University Park, is situated on the outskirts of the City of Nottingham, with a number of smaller campuses and a teaching hospital (Queen's Medical Center) located elsewhere in Nottinghamshire.

Outside the United Kingdom, Nottingham has campuses in Semenyih, Malaysia and Ningbo, China. Nottingham is organized into five constituent faculties, with more than 50 departments, institutes and research centers. Nottingham has around 34,000 students and 9,000 staff.
