A. James Clark Scholars Program

The A. James Clark Scholars Program at Virginia Tech provides unique learning experiences to exceptional in-state students majoring in engineering or building construction.

Graduating Clark Scholars

“The Clark Foundation’s work to open doors and equip talented students to address the world’s problems strongly supports our vision as a global land-grant university. This is an important new partnership and a powerful statement about the value of college access, inclusion, and diversity.”

—Timothy D. Sands, Virginia Tech President

Clark Scholars pursue rigorous coursework in their major, and take at least two business classes to develop entrepreneurial skills. As part of the program, they volunteer in community service activities, and take part in enrichment seminars and events with professional leaders.

The program was made possible by a $15 million investment from the A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation in fall 2017, the largest scholarship gift ever made to Virginia Tech. There are currently 44 Clark Scholars at Virginia Tech.

Expanding Access and Opportunity

The partnership with the Clark Foundation is helping Virginia Tech approach its campus-wide initiative to increase access to underrepresented minorities, enroll far more students from historically underserved populations, and reduce the number of high-achieving students who choose competing schools that can offer more generous financial aid.

As a sign of its commitment to this strategic goal, Virginia Tech is providing additional, annual funding in support of the Clark Scholars program. This funding ensures that the Clark Scholars attend tuition-free and have their room, board, and fees covered.
