Student Withdrawal or Resignation

Students wishing to resign or withdraw from all classes in a term will complete this form. The term withdraw is used when this request is submitted before the first day of classes; this process is called a resignation after the first day of classes.

If you submit the form once the term has started, the date you obtain the Dean's signature will be the effective date used for its processing, and any refund (if applicable) will be awarded based on that effective date and according to the refund schedule established by the Bursar’s office. Steps to submitting a withdrawal or resignation form:

  1. Complete section 1
  2. If you are withdrawing from the semester (request is being submitted before the first day of classes), you can skip section 2 (Academic/Graduate Dean).
  3. If you are resigning from the semester (request is being submitted on or after the first day of classes), email the form to Christi Boone (chboone2@vt.edu) and indicate if you live on or off campus if you are a cadet and if you are an international student.
  4. If no additional signatures are needed, Christi Boone will submit the form to the Office of the University Registrar.
  5. If you are a cadet, international student, or living on-campus, the form will be returned to you to obtain the remaining signatures as needed.
    1. Living on-campus: Obtain a signature from your RA and schedule a check-out time
    2. Corp of Cadets: Obtain signature from the Commandant
    3. International: Obtain a signature from Cranwell International Center and determine how the resignation may affect your visa status and your ability to remain in the country.
  6. If you received financial aid for the semester you are planning to resign we strongly suggest you meet with your financial aid counselor before making this decision, as the disbursement of aid you received will be impacted (i.e. a portion of this aid may be expected to be returned immediately, not 6 months after graduation).
