Engineering Orientation: Virtual Academic Advising and Course Registration - Summer/Fall 2026 

Virtual academic advising and course registration is a series of modules, events, and meetings designed to support you as you transition to college and is required for all new engineering students. This experience is in addition to the University First-Year and Transfer Fall Orientation. An outline of the process is below. 

Engineering Orientation Timeline:

  1. May 5: Receive the College of Engineering Orientation Welcome email
  2. May 5 - June 5: Complete the engineering orientation checklist items. 
  3. June 5: Receive the Virtual Academic Advising and Course Registration email
  4. June 8 - July 31: Attend mandatory virtual academic advising for your major, dates vary by major (this can be done after you begin registering for courses)
  5. June 10 - August 28: Register for fall courses (this will be an ongoing process throughout the summer and can begin prior to meeting with an academic advisor)
  6. June 8 - July 31: Attend one of the mandatory virtual COE overview sessions (schedule below)
  7. June 8 - July 31: Attend optional virtual COE Q&A sessions (schedule below)
  8. August 19, 20, or 21:  Students Only: Attend the In-Person College of Engineering Welcome Session & Academic Success Session.
  9. August 21: Students Only: Attend the In-Person College Social.
  10. August 24: Classes Begin

College of Engineering Overview Sessions (Mandatory)

The COE session will cover college details, engineering-specific academic expectations, policies and procedures, campus resources, and much more. No advance registration is required. Students need only attend one session, either live on one of the virtual dates or by watching the recording afterward. Attendance is on the honor system. All sessions are open to students and their families.

College of Engineering Session/Videos (Optional

The COE offers a series of short, focused sessions and videos to help you prepare for a strong start at Virginia Tech. These virtual materials introduce key resources and opportunities to help you confidently navigate your academic journey and make the most of your engineering experience. All sessions are open to students and their families.
