Haniyyah Majeed

Haniyyah Majeed was first exposed to the work of the U.S. Water Study Research Team while participating in the National Science Foundation’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates program in 2016, during which she helped sample water from homes in Flint, Michigan.

She began to pursue a graduate degree in civil and environmental engineering at Virginia Tech in 2017, studying antibiotic resistance genes and bacteria in wastewater and water reuse systems. But as she progressed, Majeed began to question how she could make the impact she hoped for among underrepresented groups of women, especially women of color and Muslim women.
