- To provide incoming College of Engineering students an opportunity to become familiar with the Virginia Tech university community prior to the start of their academic career.
- To provide academic enrichment in selected subjects historically difficult for first-year students.
- To provide incoming engineering students opportunities for personal and professional development.
STEP is a five-week orientation program for first-year students entering the College of Engineering. If you are selected to participate, you will experience a unique opportunity to network with peers, instructors, and industry representatives in an intensive academic environment during the summer prior to your freshman year.
The goal of STEP '17 is to ease your transition from high school to Virginia Tech and to ensure you know the keys to academic success. STEP provides you with an opportunity to become familiar with Virginia Tech and all its resources. More importantly, you will learn how different college is from high school (college is more demanding and academically intense).
The program instructors are full-time faculty and graduate students, from the departments of Engineering Education, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
During the five weeks, you will be provided instruction in chemistry, mathematics, and engineering fundamentals. You will also participate in seminars that introduce you to the research and industry side of engineering and emphasize study skills and time management.
