The Virginia Tech Network for Engineering Transfer Students partners Virginia Tech with two community colleges, Virginia Western and Northern Virginia, to support engineering transfer students earning an associates degree then transferring to earn a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech’s College of Engineering.

VT-NETS Objectives and Goals:

  • To establish stronger networks between Virginia Tech and the Virginia Community College System,
  • To enhance the potential for successful transfer and timely completion of a baccalaureate degree for engineering transfer students following the community college-to-bachelor's degree pathway,
  • To advance understanding of how various factors affect the success, retention, transfer, and graduation in engineering for low-income students , and
  • To develop new interventions and fine-tune current efforts to increase the success of transfer students in engineering nationwide

The VT-NETS programs starts when students enroll in Virginia Western Community College and Northern Virginia Community College’s engineering curriculum, where they will have access to up to a full scholarships (four semesters maximum) upon acceptance into the VT-NETS program (see Application Information). Students will have access to faculty mentoring, gain support from a cohort of their peers, attend professional development and research seminars, and visit the Virginia Tech campus. Students will build bonds with Virginia Tech faculty and staff as they visit open houses, preview weekends, and attend events during their first two years while enrolled in community college. Students will be aided in the transfer process and awarded a scholarship of up to $10,000/semester (four semesters maximum) upon acceptance into the Virginia Tech College of Engineering.
