Departments

Aerospace and Ocean Engineering

Our department's innovative approach maximizes the similarities between two dynamic fields. Faculty members engage in broad research programs, including aero-hydrodynamics, structural mechanics, material science, dynamics and control, multidisciplinary design optimization, space science engineering, and energy systems.

Biological Systems Engineering

By integrating biology and engineering, we address complex, critical needs in sustainability, environmental protection, and human health. Our graduates develop engineering solutions that safeguard land and water resources, detect and prevent human diseases, and produce food, pharmaceuticals, and polymers.

Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics

As a multidisciplinary interface between fundamental mechanics, biomedical science, and real-world applications, our department aims to enhance quality of life worldwide by addressing some of society's most pressing challenges.

Chemical Engineering

Chemical engineers not only design and run power and chemical plants, they produce vaccines, drug delivery devices, and new biomaterials. We use big data and AI to produce new materials and processes, work to design devices that remove carbon dioxide from the air to slow climate change, and discover new catalysts for sustainable energy to power the green economy of the future.

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Civil and environmental engineers provide a healthy and useful built environment for society to live, work, and play in, including sustainable infrastructure and systems that continually improve quality of life around the globe.

Computer Science

Students engage with globally significant socio-technical issues across a diverse spectrum of research areas. Our curriculum, led by notable scholars and outstanding educators, encourages students to pursue complex problem-solving, to reimagine computing to reflect its ubiquitous impact on society, and to work across disciplines to help individuals and communities thrive.

Electrical and Computer Engineering

As a top five program in the United States, we innovate research in high-demand fields like quantum engineering and semiconductor development and application. Graduate and undergraduate students engage in a project-based curriculum with industry partners, and undergraduates can choose from 12 specialized majors or general electrical or computer engineering.

Engineering Education

As home to the college's first-year General Engineering program and the internationally renowned engineering education Ph.D., our department prepares students to be exceptional engineers and educators, while serving as a global beacon for engineering and research.

Industrial and Systems Engineering

Using scientific and practical knowledge, we identify solutions for virtually all work and recreation systems, from transportation to health care. We create value for organizations by improving performance of integrated systems, including people, technology, and organizational assessment and improvement.

Materials Science and Engineering

Everything you touch has been discovered, studied, made, or improved by materials scientists and engineers. Our graduates play crucial roles in biotechnology, nanotechnology, sustainable energy, information technology, transportation systems, national defense and security, and environmental stewardship.

Mechanical Engineering

In this broad discipline, students can discover a range of engineering specialties and adaptive careers in addition to automotive and robotic engineering. Our faculty demonstrate expertise in bio-inspired technologies, nuclear engineering, additive manufacturing, and energy engineering.

Mining and Minerals Engineering

The growing green economy depends on mines and the mining engineers who design and operate them. Our low professor-student ratios and industry ties create a personalized learning environment that trains graduates to work with the latest technologies and gain access to internships and work experience.

Myers-Lawson School of Construction

Created for the industry, by the industry, our school uses a values-based approach focused on construction principles, safety, innovative technologies, and research to help build the next generation of industry leaders.
